“You are a vampire,” Stella croaked.

Madame V had told her paranormals came from all walks of life, but she had never expected Fabian Laurentis to be one of them.

Her neighbor had won her at the auction. And he was a vampire. Even looking at him didn’t make it real.

“Hi,” he repeated, patting the seat by his side.

“Hi.” Stella tried to remember the speech she had hastily hatched a few minutes ago. The shock of the discovery had fried her brain. “Thank you, but—”

“My pleasure.” Fabian’s smile widened. Dimples appeared on both his cheeks.

He was famous for his dimples. Up close, they were devastating, and they made Stella forget what she should have said right away.

He is a vampire.

“Come closer.” Fabian’s voice was gentle, but she heard the command underneath.

Instead of sending her into a bout of panic, his firm tone reassured her, and she moved on the seat.

He nodded, pleased. Then he lowered his hand on hers which was resting on her lap.

That simple gesture made it real for Stella.

Fabian Laurentis, a vampire, won me at the auction. And I should be saying to him thanks but no thanks.

His skin was smooth. Those sleepless nights had been conducive to hours of thinking of what it would feel to be touched by the famous actor. Now Stella knew. It was thrilling and terrifying at the same time.

He is a vampire. The thought kept playing on repeat in her mind.

Fabian’s fingers circled her wrist, massaging her hand with just enough pressure to make her shiver.

He lowered his mouth to Stella’s ear and closed the lapels of her cloak with his free hand. “Are you comfortable?”

Unable to answer, she nodded. If anything, with his finger pads eliciting the most mixed reaction in her body, and his gentle breath at her earlobe, she was about to moan. The thought horrified Stella. Where was her resolution to refuse his offer?

“Good,” he said, and she had no idea what was good. Then, without turning, his body still angled toward hers and his mouth close to her throat, he said, “Martino, we can go.”

Finally, Stella’s brain connected with her mouth. “Martino, please stop.” She turned slightly in the seat to look at Fabian. “We need to talk.”

With an amused glint, Fabian nodded. “Martino, give us a minute.”

Dark glass rose to give them privacy in the back.

The power of Fabian’s eyes staring back at Stella rendered her mute for a moment. Then she blurted out, “Thank you, but I can’t accept your money. I should’ve never gone through with the auction in the first place. It was a mistake. I apologize for the inconvenience—”

“You don’t want to be a companion?” he said, something passing through his gaze that looked a lot like relief.

Stella’s nerves must’ve been playing tricks on her. She took a long breath. “No, I don’t want to be a paid companion.” Fabian’s expression changed again, and she hurried to add, “It’s not personal.”

“I’m glad to hear that.” His lips quirked.

“So, again, thank you for everything.” She grabbed the door handle.
